David Edis

“There was no doubt in my mind that I was going to do anything else but medicine.”

My upbringing was very much shaped by the lives led by parents who dedicated themselves to the medical and health field. Growing up in the Parkville precinct, with the Royal Children’s hospital across the road and conversations around topics of medicine at the dinner table, medicine was in my blood.

Surgical Trainer

Launceston is a training site for OLIF spine surgery techniques.  Surgeons visit from interstate, Asia and New Zealand to learn from David. Over the past 2 year there have been over 15 visiting surgeons, who observe and assist during surgery to learn how  to perform this technique.

According to the manufactures of the equipment David Edis is probably one of only a hand full of surgeons in Australasia who are performing a similar volume of surgery using this technique. As a result David has helped run 10 courses over the last few years on mainland Australia and in Asia to teach these techniques. Putting Tasmania at the forefront of spine surgery in Australasia

We are lucky in Launceston in particular with the quality staff we have both in intensive care and anaesthetics. They are absolutely outstanding with a can do attitude. With the people we have here in Launceston I’m really able to innovate because they are so interested in helping. Which means I’m able to acquire new methods and equipment with their help. We still send patients to the bigger centre when their issues require two surgeons but the staff in Launceston respect what I’m doing and they want to help out. They can see the technique I’m bringing to Tasmania are innovative and progressive.
As one of only a hand full of surgeons performing a similar volume of this kind of surgery in Australasia I’ve been asked to assist in training others throughout Australia and Asia. As result I’ve performed training courses with the company in Australia and Asia, We’ve setup a faculty for these techniques and have run 10 courses over the last 3 years in Australia and as far away as Bangkok in Thailand.

Tasmanian by Choice

Jenny and I had always pictured ourselves living and raising our family in a regional centre rather than in the big smoke. I have family down in the Geelong area and an affinity with the Wild West Coast, having virtually grown up there spending most of my summer holidays there. However,  Geelong never quite clicked with us so when a position at the Launceston General was offered we came down and had a look.  It felt right so within a year we bought our property in the Tamar Valley and fulfilled our dream of relocating to a regional centre. Launceston offers all the things we enjoy about a regional town and the childrens school is as good as any in the bigger cities. The hospitals are wonderful with great staff and allow me to serve a vital role for the community.
